10 Secret Facts About the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Who doesn’t love settling in to watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show every year? To find out some information you may not have known about the year’s biggest televised fashion event, keep clicking through this gallery!
First of all, did you know that the vast majority of the show’s young viewers are women? It may surprise you, but there are actually twice as many female viewers than male viewers in the 18 to 34-year-old demographic.

1) AN EVER-GROWING BUDGET

The first ever Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show had a tiny budget compared to today’s fashion extravaganzas. The 1995 show, which was not televised, had a budget of $120,000, and the 2012 show cost over $12 million.

2) PULLED FROM TV IN 2004

After Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the CBS network decided not to air a Victoria’s Secret Fashion show in 2004. Otherwise, the show has been televised every year since 2001.

3) HAIR EXTENSIONS GALORE

In the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, over 180 feet of hair extensions were used to give the angels their iconic hairstyles.

4) ROYAL FANTASY BRA AND BELT

The “Royal Fantasy Bra and Belt” worn by Candice Swanepoel during the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is worth a whopping $10 miillion. The item, which is decorated with diamonds, rubies, and yellow sapphires, contains more than 4,200 gems.

5) DANGEROUS DIETING

To be a Victoria’s Secret angel and make it into the fashion show, you’ve got to have a flawless physique, and the models who are chosen usually adopt very unhealthy eating habits in order to attain that level of perfection.
Angel Adriana Lima once admitted that she cuts carbs and fat completely out of her diet six weeks before the show takes place, and she also stops drinking fluids 12 hours before walking the runway.

6) FANTASY BRAS DON’T SELL

The aptly titled Fantasy Bras may be glamorous, but it seems that no one (outside of the Victoria’s Secret corporation, that is) is willing to spend so much money for a bra, no matter how bejeweled it may be. No one has ever purchased any of the show’s Fantasy Bras, and they are usually taken apart after the show takes place.

7) STRATEGIC POSITIONING

In the beginning, Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows were held in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, but now they are positioned in the time period between Black Friday and Christmas.
By having the show televised during that time, Victoria’s Secret gets a major boost in sales throughout the holiday season. In 2010, the brand reported a daily high after that year’s show aired.

8) EXPENSIVE AD SLOTS

As one might imagine, advertising blocks during the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show are pretty pricey. According to Nielsen, companies had to pay around $200,000 for a 30 second ad in 2012.

9) GLITTER ON THE RUNWAY

As you may have noticed, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway is always covered in glitter. Just how much glitter is used, though? In 2013, 125 pounds of glitter were placed on the sparkling runway.

10) AVERAGE HEIGHT

In case you’re considering becoming a Victoria’s Secret Angel, keep in mind that you have to meet some pretty strict physical expectations! One such requirement is height; the average Angel comes in at around 5’10″ tall, and they look even taller when strutting their stuff in 6 inch heels.
